Ahead of the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix in less than two weeks’ time Nicky Hayden was pleased with his second best result of the year so far at Brno.
Sixth place at the Cardion ab Czech Republic Grand Prix over the weekend was a good building block for American star Nicky Hayden who is already excited about the prospect of riding at Indianapolis in less than a fortnight’s time.
Hayden started the Brno weekend down in 12th place in FP1, but he made steady progress over the three days of the GP, qualifying eighth on Saturday and battling to sixth in the race – best second best result to date with Ducati. For the Kentuckian rider it was a decent performance ahead of the forthcoming Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix, an exciting event for Hayden where he was on the podium at last year’s inaugural staging.
Reviewing the visit to the Czech Republic Hayden stated, “Like always we started so far behind on Friday and that was a disaster but the team worked really hard and really improved some things this weekend. So we were able to get a respectable result, not my best of the year but in fact with (Jorge) Lorenzo’s mistake the podium was not out of the question.”
He continued, “I can’t wait for Indy. It was really special at Laguna again and the crowd helped me there, so I need them at Indy too. It couldn’t have come at a better time, so hopefully we can go there and have a good weekend, try to have some fun. I know it is going to be tough but I am prepared to go there and see what happens.”
On the other side of the Ducati pit-box, Casey Stoner’s temporary replacement Mika Kallio suffered the frustration of another late crash as he clashed with Marco Melandri on the penultimate lap when a top ten finish looked assured.
The Finn commented, “Of course it was a real pity what happened with (Marco) Melandri and of course we wanted to finish this race, but even with the crash I think the race wasn’t so bad. I had some problems with the front and couldn’t push as hard as I wanted but it wasn’t so bad as we were fighting for sixth, seventh or eighth position. Even fourth place was only four or five seconds in front, but then the crash happened so we can’t be satisfied.”
On the incident which followed the crash which saw Kallio and Melandri exchanging pushes in the gravel, Kallio joked, “I think he just tried to tell me it was my fault and I tried to tell him it was his fault!”
