Several MotoGP races saw their fan attendance slip in an alarming fashion after Valentino Rossi broke his leg in a crash at Misano. There is no question that Rossi's absence from a MotoGP race can cost a promoter 10,000 tickets, or more.
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca GM Gill Campbell said today after the press conference announcing that Yamaha had signed on for four more years of supporting Laguna Seca and Laguna Seca MotoGP that she saw the Rossi phenomenon first-hand.
"After Rossi's accident and prior to his announcement that he would race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, our tickets sales had slowed somewhat," she said.
"The moment that Rossi announced that he would race here, our ticket sales jumped ten percent over last year." There is a story here at Laguna that the day Rossi announced he would indeed race, they sold over $250,000 in tickets in one day.
"I'm not sure of the figure," Campbell said, but it was a big number. I have thanked Mr. Rossi personally for this. It certainly helped out tremendously and shows the loyalty of his fans.
"I had to bring in extra help in the ticket office," Campbell said, "the phones were ringing off the hook."
